Chapter 5 quotes

This is the first chapter that discusses the 6 principles laid out in the book.

Any quotes stand out to you?

For me

p. 71 - "The real horror is how easy it is to remain in a comfortable, distorted illusion about our lives. Something may not be true, but we become so used to it that it feels right. Others who live and work closely with us can usually pick up some of our inconsistencies and defensive maneuvers. Few, however have the courage and skill to point them out ina mature, loving way."

Sad, but true. I find it hard to deal with my own stuff, but helping another, especially one whom you have to "fight" for their freedom, that is very costly.

p. 74 - "God often use pain to get us to change... We change our behavior when the pain of staying the same becomes greter than the pain of chainging."

This gets a hardy "BOOO!!!" and "AMEN!!!" at the same time.

p. 85 - "It will be a messy process. In fact, a church committed to emotional health is a messy place.

I think this is hard, especially considering that most come to church as a place of "sanctuary" away from the mess of life.

I long for this and fear this personally and as a pastor.

Book Discussion Week 3- Intro and Chapter 1

Feel free to answer any or all of the following questions or start your own line of discussion based on something from the intro or chapter 1

1. Read Psalm 69 – If David visited your church or small group and presented Psalm 69 as his testimony, would you take it as a sign of spiritual weakness or spiritual strength, immaturity or maturity? Explain.

2. How would react if David opened up in this way in a small group you were in? How would you feel if David were you a “leader” in your church, sharing this with your congregation at a Sunday worship service?

3. What about your life experiences, family history, or bad religious teaching may have caused you to deny or repress your feelings rather than bringing them to God as David did?

4. Consider the broad range of emotions Jesus experienced (Luke 19:41; Luke 10:21; Mark 14:34; Luke 7:13; Mark 3:5; Mark 6:6; Luke 7:9; Mark 3:5; Luke 12:50). What's that like to see Jesus in that light?
